Could potato peels be the future of food packaging?
We are TatoHugs, a youth-led initiative driven by innovation, environmental responsibility, and a shared desire to reimagine how we use and reuse resources. Our team brings together entrepreneurial thinkers, sustainability advocates, and future-forward dreamers with one goal: to transform agricultural waste into something useful and impactful.
Every year, there are wasted approximately 50 million tons of potato peels, with industrial processing adding another 70 000 - 140 000 tons. At the same time, plastic packaging continues to clog our oceans and landfills, 36-41% of all 141 million tons of plastic produced annually being made for food packaging. It is a system that has a significant negative impact on our planet, while lots of substitutes for potential food packaging material are being discarded.
At TatoHugs, we believe that waste isn't the end of a product's life—but the beginning of a new one.
We’ve set out to solve two global problems with one bold idea: turning food waste into eco-friendly packaging. Our first step? Harnessing the overlooked potential of potato peels to create sustainable, affordable, and functional alternatives to single-use plastic.
We believe that:
- Sustainability should be practical. Eco-friendly solutions must work for real people in real life.
- Innovation starts with curiosity. We’re not afraid to experiment, fail fast, and learn faster.
- Waste has value. Every single peel has the potential to become something meaningful.
What’s Next?
We’re currently developing an enhanced version of our packaging prototypes, made of potato waste, and preparing to test them with local food restaurants. Once we have better versions, we will give updates as soon as possible. It’s an exciting journey, and we’re just getting started.
